Going out and buying a sofa as the first step in designing a room is the adult equivalent of buying an expensive sports car as a commuter car!

You get it home and find the scale, length, color or style are ok at best…..now you are stuck!

This is because you ignored the order of steps in designing a room! There really is rhyme and reason to how to design a room and the order in which things are done!

Designing a room is not all about pictures you saw online, Pinterest or copying your friend’s room. Each home is different in the size of the room, available lighting, let alone your personal style and how your home operates.

When designing a room, this is where you start!

·       Floors: While we generally already have a floor in the home, if you are replacing hardwood etc.…. start here.

·       Scale, Traffic flow, scale and layout are next…. Basically, decide how the room is to be used.

·       Rugs: Rugs are the foundation of the room and influence color throughout the room as well as the scale of many of the items you will use in the room. Leaving Rugs to the end creates chaos and is the hardest way to design, severely limiting your options later in the process. (If you have a white room and use a red rug, the whole room has a rose hue, change the rug to navy and it will have a grey cast) Also, since there isn’t only one way to organize a room, you may consider different size rugs, then different scale furniture etc.....

Avoid costly mistakes such as:

·       Painting first, this is the cheapest part or the project and the easiest to manipulate…. This one goes LAST!

·       Trendy ideas that don’t make sense for the type of home you have.

·       Doing the steps out of order!

Always have a plan in mind and if you don’t know what to do, speak with someone who can help you get it right! Online references can be a place to start, but for as many sites that give you solid advise there are 10 from people who have no background in design and are little more that armchair quarterbacks.
