What Really Defines an Oriental Rug?

What Really Defines an Oriental Rug?

The term “Oriental Rug” in today’s world only means the rug is hand knotted. Originally it denotes the part of the world where a bulk of the Hand-Knotted products are woven.

Iran (Persia) is the most famous for their intricate designs and colorful designs. Due to recent events over the last 50-60 years, we see less popularity and availability of the traditional Persian Rug. However, the best Persian Rugs are still the Gold Standard for artistry and quality.

India and Pakistan are some of the largest weaving centers today. They produce a variety of styles from Contemporary to Traditional, Tribal to Transitional.

Other countries that traditionally weave hand-knotted rugs are Afghanistan, Turkey, China as well as several smaller countries that historically were part of “Persia”.

 Understanding the Craftsmanship

Hand-Knotted rugs regardless of Style or pattern are woven on a loom. Each knot is tied by hand, often taking months or even years to complete an entire rug.  Size, design, complexity of pattern, number of colors and density all determine how long it will take to make the rug. (The same factors are a large part of the overall cost as well.) This craftsmanship results in a durable, one-of-a-kind piece that can last for generations.

Diverse Designs for Every Taste

While most people can identify a traditional pattern, recent designs deal in a more muted color palette and rug weavers have evolved to encompass these trends into the styles they weave. Over the last few years, we saw a trend towards more color overall in design. However, color is being used in new and unique ways from rugs to paint and window coverings. If you need help navigating current trends, Kaoud Designers are well versed in different styles and can help you with options that will work in the space you are creating.
