HOW TO SHOP FOR AN AREA RUG!!!

HOW TO SHOP FOR AN AREA RUG!!!

STYLE VS FASHION

Shopping for an area rug is a very personal experience as it will set the tone for the room you are working in. “Think Art for the Floor!”

As area rugs regardless of which type influence the rest of your room here are a few points to consider as you are starting to design your room.

·      Choose your rug first!! Color influences the rest of the room. For example, in a white room a red rug will push the room to have a rosy hue. If we change that rug to navy the room will have a greyer hue.

·      Size is important to consider as a rug too small and too big are equally bad. If you haven’t chosen a rug for a room before, ask our experts and they can help you decide. (There isn’t only one way to set a room up) But there are tried, and true reasons rugs are made in the sizes they are…. Don’t be afraid to ask why!

·      In today’s world it’s important to consider if you want a space that is trendy and therefore only relevant for a short amount of time or something more timeless. For example, if you have a rug in hot pink in a bedroom, your child may grow out of it in a few years and want something more “mature”. In a kid’s room this may be ok but think about the same idea in you Livingroom and you may want to choose something that will stand the test of time, while still allowing you to have the style and design you prefer.

·      Remember Fashion is Trendy and short lived while Style is individually unique to you! Keep an open mind as there may be styles and options you didn’t know were even available that may be exactly what you are looking for.

Types of Rugs

·     A Hand-Knotted Rug will always be the Gold Standard for both Design and Durability. While this has a greater up-front cost, over time it requires less maintenance and should be cleaned less often making it more exclusive in design and heartier to live on.

·      Machine Made or Power loomed rugs are also an option in the market today. These can be wool, but more and more often they use synthetic fibers. These can be less expensive but be careful of the overall quality. Some vendors use material like Olefin or Polyester to cut costs as well as reducing the density. This leaves you with a rug with very low durability and fibers which cush and degrade. Kaoud Rugs does curate a selection of Machine-Made rugs which will be durable and offer a variety of styles.

·      Tufted rugs are also an option and are easily identifiable by the cloth backing on the rug. These are generally wool, but instead of being woven they are glued together. Over time the glue degrades and even on day one the rug will shed. As a result, these are some of the least durable, although not the least expensive rugs.

·      Finally, there are many options that can be customized specifically for your space in wool and high-end nylons. The material generally comes on a roll like Broadloom but is meant to be cut and customized for your individual.
